The main components of a roller shutter door is the barrel assembly and the door curtain, these too are made up of individual items and can be replaced but the extent of this damage or wear to these two vital parts can sometimes make replacement a more cost effective option.
The barrel assembly or axle is often a steel tube, the size and thickness is determined to prevent deflection of the tube under the weight of the door curtain (industry standard is 1:400). The barrel may contain shafts, bushes, springs, motor and brakes. Depending upon the age of the door, all the items are readily available and replaceable. The roller barrel assembly is a classed as a suspension element and carries the weight of the roller shutter curtain, It is recommended that any repairs to the barrel assembly is carried out by a specialist door contractor who has the expertise to identify the parts, faults and can carry out the repairs safely. Replacement of motors and safety brakes should only be carried out by a specialist door contractor
The curtain of the roller shutter door with the exception of maybe one supplier is made up of individual laths. These laths can either be made from steel, aluminium or plastic and commonly range between depths of 37mm to 100mm, single skin or twin walled. Individual laths can be replaced but care is required to ensure that they are compatible with each other. Where necessary, mixing of door curtain types should only be carried out by specialist door contractors who have the expertise to identify which are compatible. To prevent sideways movement of the curtain assembly, the laths are fitted with endlocks, these can be either every lath or every other lath depending upon the curtain type. Endlocks can be steel, nylon or plastic and are often riveted to the lath. Small sections of curtain to the lower half of the door can be replaced by competent personnel with basic hand tools. Greater quantities or full curtain replacements should only be carried out by a specialist door contractor who has the expertise to identify the suspension element of the door and possibly any counterbalance arrangements, which could if identified wrongly lead to serious harm.
The roller shutter curtain is held in position by the roller shutter guide channels. The channels can be in either steel or aluminium and come in different depths depending upon curtain types and wind loading requirements. The guide channels themselves are usually bolted or welded to an angle and can be replaced by competent personnel with basic tools. Guide channels should be replaced with equivalent types and depths to ensure the curtain runs freely and the specification of the door against wind loadings is maintained. Special care should be taken when replacing guide angles ensuring they are not supporting anything other than the guide channels. Guide angles should be replaced with equivalent type and material to ensure curtain alignment and wind loadings are un-affected.
